2020 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Scholars, Families, Volunteers, and OJS Supporters,
Across the country, there are mounting concerns that the pause in traditional classroom instruction due to the COVID-19 health crisis will deter the most at-risk scholars from continuing on the path of higher education. For over 25 years, OJS has believed education is the surest way out of poverty. As such, we take this very real risk seriously and as a result, we are rising to the challenge.
OJS programming is quickly adapting to the closure of local schools, universities across the country, and other essential student support hubs such as libraries and college advisement centers. We’re transitioning critical academic programming to online platforms such as online student support classes (yes, that means supper club!), one-on-one virtual college advisement meetings, virtual tutoring sessions, and more.
Our Programs Team has matched every one of our scholars with a one-on-one counselor (social work intern) to ensure their mental health and well-being continue to be monitored and supported during these moments of increased stress, anxiety and in many cases depression. OJS is truly leaning in and we remain fully invested in our scholars’ mental health, academic success, and life-long resiliency.
As always, we remain committed in our values of education, transparency, mentoring and gratitude; and on that note, we would like to wholeheartedly thank the many selfless volunteers, including, board members, interns, mentors, and tutors who continue to serve OJS scholars in spite of such rapidly changing and uncertain times. Although we are all facing many unknowns, we believe in the power of community. Thank you for being a part of ours.
Please take great care of yourselves,
-Irene Quevedo, ED
